What Are The Best Thanksgiving Devotions And Activities For Singles?
As we embrace the fall season, let’s explore a list of Thanksgiving devotions and activities we can do solo or with friends!
Thanksgiving is a time to gather around the dinner table with the entire family, friends, and loved ones, to reflect on God’s provision in our lives and the blessings He has provided for us. But first, let’s be transparent…holidays can be challenging.
Being single during this time of the year can be joyous and also tricky. I have been asked many times about my current situation by my whole family regarding when that special day will arrive, do I have a significant other or when can they expect grandchildren?
These type of discussion questions are always a good time around the Thanksgiving table from family members which can be exhausting, discouraging, and also another great reason why some have Thanksgiving dinner alone.
I often wonder and ask myself the following question, is it me? Is God hearing my prayer for a spouse? Did the “let go and let God” prayer work? Oftentimes, the waiting season is a difficult time but it is also a season of refinement, trust, and patience. And we are definitely tested during the holiday season.
Why is Thanksgiving important to God?
As Christians, we are called to give thanks and praise to God. Everything we have is God’s blessings, from food on our plates to the warmth of the sun as it hits our faces on a summer day and show our gratitude and worship to our Lord.
Although the day of Thanksgiving is to show thanks, it is also a great way for us to reflect on what we are thankful for every day!
Sometimes, when life is challenging, it is hard to have a thankful heart. When I am convicted by the Holy Spirit because of sin, I have an attitude of gratitude. How can we be thankful if we feel defeated or angry or “insert emotion?”
Let’s take a look at a few Thanksgiving bible verses as to why being grateful is important to God and with the help of a devotional, we can practice thanks, even when we don’t know how.
Bible verses about being thankful for blessings
Praise the LORD! Oh give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever!
Psalm 106:1
Before I gave my life to Christ, I lived for myself and wasn’t aware of how my actions and life choices distanced me from having a relationship with God. Every time I have fallen, sinned, or screwed up, His steadfast love endures as the psalm says. Let’s be thankful, even during our unfaithfulness, and remember God is merciful and His faithful love.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
James 1:17
God’s provision in our lives is something to give praise and thanks for every minute of the day. Everything that we are blessed with is from God.
And we know that for those who love God, all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28
From the answered prayers to the unanswered to the maybes and the no’s, we know God is for us. We all have gone through trials and tribulations and at times, we may not see God’s hand in them but this verse reminds us how God works out all good things and that is something to be thankful for every day!

What can you do for Thanksgiving by yourself?
Now that we looked at God’s word about Thanksgiving, what can single women do during Thanksgiving either by themselves or with a small group?
Here are some simple ideas for making Thanksgiving special when you are spending it by yourself.
Thanksgiving devotional Books
I enjoy reading and collecting faith-based devotionals. Whether studying a book in the bible or if I am struggling with loneliness, a good devotion will always help me get back on track and focus on scripture.
Thanksgiving is a great time to start a new devotional and focus on gratitude during the holiday season. Write down your Thanksgiving devotions and reflect on the past year’s notes to see your growth, answered prayers, and what God is doing in your life and in the lives of others.

Where can I go for Thanksgiving solo?
One of the best chapters in my life was when I took a solo trip to California. With nerves as high as the mountains, I conquered a fear of solo traveling and had the most amazing time. Each day I encountered a new blessing from God that included my Christian Uber drivers who prayed over me to the beautiful sunsets God blessed me with on the Pacific coast.

Traveling alone, allowed me to rely and trust God in the unknown and develop a deeper relationship with Him.
If you enjoy traveling solo or want to get out of your comfort zone, consider planning a trip for yourself during Thanksgiving. Use this time as a way to connect deeper with God by studying scripture and reflecting on answered prayers.
- Depending on where you live, pack a picnic and catch the sunrise or sunset and relish the beauty of God’s creation.
- If you are not visiting loved ones and are able to take a trip, check out Pretty Place Chapel in North Carolina! Be sure to check their schedule before booking!
- Book a weekend trip and visit the Museum of the Bible. Be sure to check their schedule before booking!
- Visit Noah’s Ark in Kentucky and walk through a Bible-sized rendition of the ark! Be sure to check their schedule before booking!
No plans to travel but staying home or local on Thanksgiving? Challenge yourself to find different Thanksgiving ideas for spending time alone with God, especially during the month of November.
Just because we are single, doesn’t mean we can’t have fun!
thanksgiving crafts to do at home
Craft projects are another great Thanksgiving day activity that you can do in the comfort of your own home or invite family and friends over. Put on your favorite worship music and as you work on your project, talk to God. For the longest time, I thought I had to say the right words to be heard but our Father wants us as we are, He knows our thoughts, our desires, our hearts…just talk!
- Get creative and decorate a thankful pumpkin.
- Grab a paint-by-numbers kit.
- Do you have single friends? Host a friends-giving either in person or virtually.
- Start a prayer board and pray over yourself, your family, and your friends. Use mustard seeds with each prayer, construction paper, sticky notes, and faith-based stickers.
self care activities during thanksgiving
Self care is different for everyone but also needed, especially during the holidays with or without family and friends. Did you know, the bible teaches us the importance of self care?
As Christians, we are to take care of our bodies as mentioned in 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, have alone time as Mark 1:35 states and if we are weary, to lean on God as Matthew says in Matthew 11.
- Treat yourself to your favorite takeout or Thanksgiving meal and binge a new TV series or movie. Have you seen The Chosen?
- Pamper yourself to an at home spa day.
- Spend the day at your local soup kitchen or shelter and volunteer! Volunteering is an uplifting Thanksgiving activity you can do alone or plan with friends!
- If you are struggling with being alone on Thanksgiving, reach out to family, friends, or your church for prayer and guidance.
Thanksgiving is a time to celebrate and express gratitude for all that we have. Whether you choose to travel, engage in fun activities, or simply spend time in reflection and prayer, you are not alone because you have the greatest company of all, Jesus!
