Christian Singleness: 4 Helpful Reasons to Embrace Your Journey
Christian singleness can be a struggle for a single woman, as it has been for me for many years, especially in today’s society. It’s challenging to appreciate the beauty of being single when faced with the uncertainty of waiting. In a world where worth and identity often revolve around relationships and marriage, scripture offers a different perspective.
In this post, we will explore four compelling reasons why Christian singleness is a blessing and how embracing and accepting this season of life can lead to spiritual growth and a deeper understanding of God’s sovereignty.
Over the years, I searched for fulfillment in relationships, often pushing God aside while focusing on the person I was with. You can read more of my story here, but I have learned that no one can fulfill our needs the way Christ can. When I stopped searching and realized that God was all I needed, I began to embrace the gift He was giving me—Himself, the greatest gift of all.
Marriage isn’t promised to us but the bible teaches that God knows the desires of our hearts and we should always seek Him first for that fulfillment instead of another. I learned that lesson the hard way! I reached a point where I knew and trusted in God’s plan for my life, believing that He would fulfill my heart’s desires in other ways.
Reason 1: Self-Discovery and Personal Growth In Christian SIngleness
Christian singleness is a blessing, not a punishment or a curse. It offers a unique opportunity to focus on God, self-discovery, and personal growth. Without the commitments of a relationship, you have more time and freedom to pursue your goals, travel to new places, and explore new hobbies.
Use this period to delve deeper into scripture and learn from the women in the Bible who followed Jesus, the ultimate teacher. Personally, I have used this time to immerse myself in scripture, heal from past hurts, and fully rely on His will in all things.
What should I do as a single Christian?
- Learn new skills to further your education or career, which can also be beneficial in church or ministry settings.
- Travel and visit biblically inspired places like the Museum of the Bible or Pretty Place Chapel.
- Attend local bible studies or start your own which can open up discussions on singleness and the church.
- Single Christian retreats or attend Christian single conferences

Reason 2: Deepen Your Relationship with God
Embracing your journey as a single Christian woman also provides a unique opportunity to deepen your relationship with God. In the busyness of life, it’s easy to neglect your spiritual life or prioritize other things over your relationship with God. However, Christian singleness offers a season of increased intimacy with the Lord.
Reflecting on past relationships, I’ve struggled in this area, but God has a way of convicting my heart and revealing the idols in my life. I’ve come to realize that until He is at the forefront, I’ll always seek false promises that only He can provide and keep.
How to focus on God while single?
Take advantage of this time to establish a daily routine that includes a vibrant prayer life. Choose a book, character, or topic from the Bible to study, or explore the list of Bible study guide books below to challenge yourself in your study routine. Allow God to speak to you and guide you during this season of Christian singleness as you dedicate time to Him and discern His will for your life, whether it involves a future relationship or not.
Make your relationship with Him your ultimate aim. Remember, your ultimate fulfillment and joy stem from your relationship with God, not from any earthly relationship.

Reason 3: Building Strong Christian Friendships
Another valuable aspect of embracing your journey as a single Christian woman is the opportunity to cultivate strong Christian friendships and a supportive community. When you’re not in a romantic relationship, you have more time and energy to invest in your friendships and connect with like-minded individuals, as emphasized in 1 Thessalonians 5:11 and Ecclesiastes 4:9-10.
I understand that making friends, especially as an older single woman, can be challenging. However, God reminds us not to be fearful but to have a spirit of sound mind. Attend events at your local church, women’s retreats, or ministries, and be proactive in building friendships.
What does a true Christian friendship look like?
Having Christian friends allows you to pray for and uplift each other through life’s various seasons, particularly when navigating Christian singleness. I embraced this phase as a chance to nurture friendships and build a robust support network, especially during its numerous ups and downs—believe me, there are plenty.
I remember reaching out to trusted Christian friends who were also experiencing the same season, seeking reminders of God’s truth and His promises in my life through text messages and phone calls.

qualities of a good Christian friend
- Love and Compassion: Demonstrating unconditional love and genuine concern for each other’s well-being.
- Encouragement and Support: Providing biblical encouragement, support, and uplifting words, especially when it gets lonely.
- Accountability: Holding each other accountable in faith, helping to stay true to Christian values and commitments.
- Honesty and Trust: Building a foundation of trust through honesty and transparency.
- Prayerfulness: Praying for one another regularly, interceding for each other’s needs and growth.
- Forgiveness and Grace: Extending forgiveness and grace, understanding that everyone makes mistakes.
- Shared Faith and Values: Bonding over shared beliefs, values, and commitment to living out the teachings of Christ.
- Service and Sacrifice: Willingness to serve each other selflessly and sacrifices for friendship.
- Mutual Respect: Respecting each other’s opinions, boundaries, and individuality.
- Joy and Fellowship: Enjoying each other’s company and celebrating life’s moments together.
Reason 4: Embracing Your Identity and Worth in Christ During Christian Singleness
Christian singleness provides a unique opportunity to love and serve God wholeheartedly, without the distractions and responsibilities that come with a romantic relationship. If you are in this season of being single, try to fully understand your identity as a daughter of the King and cultivate a deep sense of self-worth rooted in God’s love for you.
Remember that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, as it says in Proverbs 31:10-31, and that God has a unique purpose and plan for your life, regardless of your relationship status. Once you perceive yourself through God’s eyes, you won’t depend on others’ opinions or seek validation in relationships anymore.
what does the bible say about being single?
The apostle Paul, who was single himself, encouraged others to consider the benefits of Christian singleness. In 1 Corinthians 7:32-35, he explains that singleness can be seen as a gift and a blessing, allowing those who are single to fully embrace their relationship with God.
